Middle School Art Teacher, Short-Term Family Leave Replacement, January 7 - February 15, 2013

Katherine Delmar Burke School is an independent K-8 girls’ school located on a 3 1/2 acre campus in San Francisco. We emphasize the development of fundamental and higher level critical thinking skills in an atmosphere of creativity, exploration, and academic rigor. 

 Position Summary

   •     Full time

   •     6 weeks

Responsibilities include:

·      Teaching art to fifth and sixth graders (two classes each grade, 18-23 students, meeting for 50-minute periods twice in each six-day rotation)

·      Teaching two 105-minute classes each six-day rotation to a smaller class of seventh graders

·      Teaching small eighth grade art electives (Urban Arts and Interactive Sculpture)

·               Serving as advisor to a group of 12 eighth graders (meeting daily for morning homeroom and Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons for a 35-minute discussion/activity period

Position Requirements

·      Experience teaching art, including contemporary art, preferably to middle school students

•   Familiarity with an independent school environment helpful, but not necessary

I am appalled how little information there is out there for kids about women artists, so I decided to create some. For my MA in art education, I am writing a series of 5 picture book biographies about women artists: Rosa Bonheur, Elizabeth Catlett, Maria Martinez, and Ruth Asawa, along with some curriculum ideas for teachers. (Yes, I am hoping to publish these)

2nd Grade Bay Studies

One of my favorite projects with the second grade was related to their study of the San Francisco Bay. We started by taking a little field trip down to the bay with cameras to see what we noticed. Before we left I showed them examples of good and bad photos and we talked about how to use the cameras.

I let them know that they would only get to keep 4 of their very best photos and gave them the chance to delete the others off of their camera before downloading them all to my computer.

I used iPhoto to make an "event" for each kid, which I then printed as a contact sheet. At the next class the students selected one to do a watercolor interpretation of. I stressed that we did not need a perfect copy, but that as an artist they had the freedom to make some choices about how to show something about the bay. If a student did not have great photos they had the option of selecting another from a large pile of extras that they other students no longer needed.

In their classroom the students wrote poems, and we pulled a few juicy words or a phrase out of their poems to include with their painting.

The final step was to come up with a simple shape of something we see in the bay to make a stamped border for their painting. This could include the things that people bring, like bottles & cans, or things we know are below the water such as fish or jellyfish. Each child cut a piece of foam and glued it to chipboard, which we let dry before printing on black paper. The blue, turquoise and white inks were particularly popular choices!

Part time opening

Brandeis Hillel Day School, Marin Campus, is looking for a kindergarten art teacher to teach the kindergarten class two hours a week. Instruction would happen once a week for two hours in the late morning. Brandeis Hillel is looking for a creative teacher who will work collaboratively with the kindergarten classroom teachers integrating art with the existing and exciting curriculum.
