Request from Kieren
I am looking for 3 people to read my project and answer a short (1 page) survey.
I am appalled how
little information there is out there for kids about women artists, so I
decided to create some. For my MA in art education, I am writing a
series of 5 picture book biographies about women
artists: Rosa Bonheur, Elizabeth Catlett, Maria Martinez, and Ruth
Asawa, along with some curriculum ideas for teachers. (Yes, I am hoping
to publish these)
I would email or
send this info to you, probably early to mid november and need the
survey back in a couple of weeks. If this is something you're interested
in, email me: kieren{at}kierendutcher.com
thanks!

2nd Grade Bay Studies
One of my favorite projects with the second grade was related to their study of the San Francisco Bay. We started by taking a little field trip down to the bay with cameras to see what we noticed. Before we left I showed them examples of good and bad photos and we talked about how to use the cameras.I let them know that they would only get to keep 4 of their very best photos and gave them the chance to delete the others off of their camera before downloading them all to my computer.
I used iPhoto to make an "event" for each kid, which I then printed as a contact sheet. At the next class the students selected one to do a watercolor interpretation of. I stressed that we did not need a perfect copy, but that as an artist they had the freedom to make some choices about how to show something about the bay. If a student did not have great photos they had the option of selecting another from a large pile of extras that they other students no longer needed.

In their classroom the students wrote poems, and we pulled a few juicy words or a phrase out of their poems to include with their painting.
The final step was to come up with a simple shape of something we see in the bay to make a stamped border for their painting. This could include the things that people bring, like bottles & cans, or things we know are below the water such as fish or jellyfish. Each child cut a piece of foam and glued it to chipboard, which we let dry before printing on black paper. The blue, turquoise and white inks were particularly popular choices!

Bacich Elementary School Community Art Project Clay Figure Installation
654 + Clay Figures
Few creative subjects are as captivating as the human and animal form. From representational to abstract, to heroic, to whimsical, the interpretations are endless. Kindergarten through 4th grade and staff, were directed by the art teacher, Mrs. Libby, to create a figure out of clay in any form or way that inspires them. The only requirements for the artists to consider were, that the figure had to be built well and strong and it had to stand up (lay down) somehow. Mrs. Libby accommodated different grade levels by teaching ceramic skill sets developmentally appropriate for each grade. In order to fully represent Bacich school community, the teaching staff had a chance to shape and mold a figure as well. All together we have completed close to 700 figures representing the creativity of our school community.
Materials and Techniques:
We used 950 lbs. of Laguna low fire red clay. The figures were bisque fired at a temp. of 1950 degrees. We used two different polishing techniques to achieve a variation of brown shades. The lighter figures were clear glazed with Mod Podge. The darker wood toned patina was achieved by applying shoe polish to the fired red clay and buffing the surface with brushes and rags. Both glazing and polishing techniques insures that the figures are water proof.
The figures are grouped by class. The artists may take their figures home at the end of the school year.

What should we ask of art education?
Phyllis Wattis Distinguished Lecture
Lois Hetland: What Should We Ask of Art Education?
Thursday 2 February, 7 p.m.
Phyllis Wattis Theater, SFMOMA
Lois Hetland is one of the leading thinkers on teaching, learning, and visual art. She is a key member of Project Zero, the educational research group of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Few people can so powerfully make the case for the educational value of art as Hetland, who has long focused on creativity in personal development. For this lecture she considers creativity in relation to three other areas: product, process, and place. She explores the distinctive value of contemporary art, the role of cultural institutions, and the demands of the creative economy.
Hetland will begin by noting the ways in which art education is undervalued and how arts educators have attempted to justify it by extra-artistic qualities—achievement in non-arts subjects relevance to the creative economy—arguments that miss the spirit of a liberal education and, at K–12 levels, the “whole child.” Hetland will then discuss two key issues in detail: the value of Artistic Mind as the desired outcome of arts education and the wider value of creativity in society.
Her discussion will address the extended field of arts participants, contexts, and venues (including schools, community spaces, and museums); the value of basing art education on the work of living artists; and the four categories of creativity, as Hetland sees them: creative person, process, place, and product.
Her lecture will be followed by Q&A with Malissa Feruzzi Shriver, chair of the California Arts Council, and Dominic Willsdon, Leanne and George Roberts Curator of Education and Public Programs at SFMOMA.
